January 25, 2018 Over the last few months, we've gained some really efficient strategies to solve for addition & subtraction problems. Look at how we've been using our knowledge of place value to decompose numbers and accurately solve problems.
PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLICATION
October 30, 2017 Over the last few months, we've gained some really efficient strategies to solve for multiplication problems. We've even discovered three properties on our own: Commutative; Distributive; and Associative. With these in mind, any multiplication problem seems solvable!
AB PATTERNS IN MATH & IN DANCE!
NUMBER TALKS & SHARE OUTS: EARLY CONCEPTS OF MULTIPLICATION
September 28, 2017 One of the most exciting milestones in third grade is...LEARNING MULTIPLICATION! Well, we've embarked on that journey through number talks and problem solving that asks us to work with equal groups. Counting Collections was a great foundation for us because we got to practice working with concrete objects and make equal groups out of them. During Counting Collections, we also got to practice recording our thinking. We cannot wait to dive deeper into multiplication & division for the rest of the trimester!
ESTIMATING & RECORDING OUR THINKING WITH COUNTING COLLECTIONS
September 17, 2017 On our second week of Counting Collections, we focused on estimating and recording our thinking so that others can understand. We realized that mathematicians estimate because it helps them check their answer and also it allows us to use our schema (background knowledge) on past experiences with groups to make an educated guess on future groups of objects. We've also been practicing recording our thinking clearly so that other people can understand our strategy without having us there to explain it verbally. We cannot wait to use what we've learned during these last two weeks to begin multiplication & division.
COUNTING COLLECTIONS
September 01, 2017 We've begun our year with Counting Collections! This will be a regular activity throughout our year. Counting Collections challenges students to find efficient and accurate ways to count collections ranging from 100 to over 1000 items! While we're counting, we strengthen and deepen our understanding of place value, of relative size, and of equal groups. It also helps us learn the names of and how to write numbers. By working together and learning from each other, we discover different ways to skip count and different ways to group numbers. Counting Collections will provide us a strong foundation for multiplication and division.
